Around 50 cars have been covered with what appears to be human blood in the Germany's city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, as reported by police.

Vehicles, walls and mailboxes were defaced, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they reported in a official communication.

Police report they were alerted late on Wednesday, when a man discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored substance.

The fluid had been drawn in the form of a banned symbol, they stated.

Officers then found multiple other vandalized vehicles and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.

These symbols are banned in Germany under regulations prohibiting the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.

Officials report early analysis indicate the liquid was most likely blood from a person.

"Currently there is no indication as to where it came from; investigators are currently not informed of any physical harm in association with the incident," they added.

Municipal representatives said they were trying "to unravel the case" and have appealed to the public for tips.

A senior representative stated the incident rendered him stunned and needed to be solved promptly.

"This incident hits the very heart of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the extremist attack half a decade ago," he posted on a platform, referring to the death of nine people by a shooter targeting residents of migrant background in 2020.
