Trump's System of Retribution and Reward

Donald Trump's voracious desire for retribution has rapidly evolved into a methodical system. During the twelve months, the president's fury and whims have assumed the guise of administrative measures in a manner reminiscent to past dictatorial systems. Federal officials who fail to comply are summarily dismissed and replaced by devotees. Political leaders who question him risk prosecution, trial and sanctions. Opponents have been designated under executive directives as “hostile to national interests”, “opposed to religious values” and “anti-capitalist”, and threatened with prosecution as “security threats”.

Government Institutions Transformed

Every case involving legal action of Trump's enemies and immunity for loyalists demonstrates its own particular features. But, regardless of their individual nature, they represent examples of what has arisen as a calculated approach. These events are anything but coincidental. Trump's purge of federal prosecutors and FBI personnel, alongside his appointment of supporters in high-level positions, started swiftly, promptly assumed a pattern, and has now been formed into a system. The justice department and the law enforcement agency have been restructured into partisan bodies under the president's direct command to implement his directives. Unfairness has been rendered standard. It represents the system of punishment.

Leadership is more concerned with penalizing the President's perceived adversaries than they are with defending our national security.

Inside the Apparatus

The origin of this system has been exposed in the lawsuit of multiple previous senior FBI officials filed in September in the federal court in the capital against top official an administration figure and attorney general Pam Bondi for wrongful dismissal in “a campaign of payback against Plaintiffs for what the accused judged to be a failure to exhibit sufficient devotion”. The document states that one official, the former acting FBI director, recounts a discussion in which Patel “publicly acknowledged the illegality of his behavior”.

He had tried to defend FBI agents from being fired, the complaint claims. He told him that “administration officials” – interpreted by the official to be the presidential administration and federal prosecutors – had ordered him to dismiss all those who they considered as having worked on a criminal investigation against him. The complaint adds: “Patel stated that he had to terminate the individuals his bosses told him to dismiss, because his ability to hold his own job was contingent on the removal of the agents who were involved in investigations involving the President. Patel noted that there was no option he or Driscoll could do to prevent these or any other terminations, because ‘the bureau sought to place the President in prison and he remembers.’” Once he informed Patel he was breaking the bureau's own policies, the director supposedly said “he recognized that and he knew the essence of the swift terminations were almost certainly improper”.

Extensive Impact

Following his alleged admission to the official, the DoJ and the Federal Bureau have been dismantled and redirected for Trump's revenge apparatus. Multiple of the agency's senior executives were dismissed or compelled to leave in the initial period of the presidency. Roughly 4,500 professional attorneys at the department have accepted a “voluntary departure plan”. At least multiple federal prosecutors, including those in the New York office, stepped down in dissent over what they considered as partisan influence in withdrawing the criminal prosecution against the New York City mayor, Eric Adams, in as a trade for his collaboration with Trump's Immigration and Customs Enforcement detentions of migrants. The anti-corruption unit of DoJ, which manages ethical violations, has been diminished to a handful of lawyers. The civil rights division has been severely reduced: 70% of its staff has departed. A third of senior leaders at the justice department have quit. The section implementing environmental law has experienced the exit of a majority its supervisors.

Incentives and Punishments

Concerning the legal matter, the temporary lawyer for the federal division, Danielle Sassoon, quit in objection against what she described as the “trade-off”. The border official, his “border czar,” showed up as the agent with him on a media outlet to announce: “Should he fail to deliver, I'll reappear in New York City.”. Additionally, another figure, earlier the justice department figure and a former Trump attorney, who negotiated the arrangement, was given an appellate federal judgeship, a potential springboard to the highest court.

Trump's protection for crimes perpetrated while in power, awarded by the extraordinary decision of the GOP-led on the judicial body, thus thwarting his prosecution over the political violence and preserving his public standing for the presidential race, is the foundation stone on which he depends to shield his supporters. With such immunity, he has been liberated to enable misconduct. The impact of the court judgment saturates his government and the political party down to its bones. The court matter has metastasized. As a past leader's administration lawyer the figure remarked about the Watergate
