Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Evacuations Reported

The island nation was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and displaced over a million residents.

Authorities reported that the massive storm caused extensive sudden floods, storm surges, mudslides, and fierce gale-force winds, prompting the evacuation of 1.4 million residents nationwide.

Extensive Damage and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, disaster response teams documented rising waters climbing to the tops of houses and homes being swept away by strong flows.

Our team saved 14 individuals who were trapped on the roof surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer explained. One resident also called in panic, saying the roof of his house was about to be ripped off by the wind. We rescued him and four relatives.”

By Monday, authorities confirmed two fatalities: one from drowning on the island and another who died when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The super typhoon weakened to a severe tropical storm early Monday while moving over the main island, home to the national capital.

Per meteorological authorities, its maximum winds decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is projected to continue weakening while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency indicated efforts were ongoing to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Approximately thousands of shelters were activated to accommodate 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit shortly following another severe storm, that claimed hundreds of lives with dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for those still missing had to be suspended recently due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is making tropical storms stronger and common. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines this year.

Researchers report that the frequency of super-typhoons striking the islands has increased doubled in the past twenty years.

International estimates suggest that intense storms result in an average of US$3.5 million in losses for the Philippines every year.

The nation’s leader issued a state of emergency last week due to the severe damage from the prior typhoon and the expected damage from the new storm.
