Health tech firm Healthily approached the care organization about the program to use its generative AI technology to provide companionship, along with an opportunity for home care clients to log any medical concerns or concerns for a caregiver to follow up.

Dean Jones, head of the home care division, explains the AI check-in being trialled does not replace any in-person visits.

“Recipients continue to get a weekly face to face meeting, but in between visits … the [AI] system enables a routine call, which can then flag any possible issues to care staff or a client’s family,” Jones notes.

The managing director, the CEO of the company, reports there have been no any negative events reported from the St Vincent’s trial.

Healthily uses open AI “with strict safety protocols” to ensure the conversation is secure and mechanisms are established to address critical medical problems promptly, the director says. As an instance, if a client is experiencing chest pains, it would be alerted to the care team and the call terminated so the person could call emergency services.

She believes artificial intelligence has an significant part given staffing shortages across the healthcare sector.

“What we can do very safely, using such systems, is reduce the administrative load on the workforce so qualified health professionals can focus on doing the job that they’re trained to do,” she says.

A research center in the city has been collaborating with scientists from a UK university who pioneered artificial intelligence techniques to detect neurological lesions called focal cortical dysplasias from MRI images.

These lesions trigger epileptic episodes that often cannot be controlled with drugs, meaning surgery to excise the tissue becomes the sole option. But, the surgery can only be performed if the doctors can pinpoint the affected area.

A study recently released in the journal Epilepsia, a group from the research body, headed by neurologist Emma Macdonald-Laurs, demonstrated their “AI epilepsy detective” could identify the lesions in up to 94% of cases from MRI and PET scans in a specific form of the malformations that have historically been overlooked in the majority of patients (60%).

The AI was developed using the images of 54 patients and then evaluated with pediatric cases and adult patients. Of the 17 children, 12 had surgery and 11 are now seizure free.

The tool employs AI algorithms similar to the breast cancer screening – highlighting regions of abnormality, which are subsequently reviewed by experts “but it makes it a lot quicker to reach a conclusion,” the researcher explains.

She stresses the researchers are still in the “early phases” of the project, with a further study necessary to get the technology heading towards clinical implementation.

Prof Mark Cook, a brain specialist who was independent from the research, notes modern imaging now generate such vast quantities of high-resolution data that it is hard for a person to review it thoroughly. Thus for clinicians the challenge of finding these lesions was like “identifying the needle in the haystack.”

“It’s a great demonstration of how artificial intelligence can assist clinicians in making quicker, more accurate diagnoses, and has the potential to enhance surgical access and results for children with otherwise intractable epilepsy,” Cook comments.

Dr Stefan Buttigieg, the deputy head of the European Public Health Association’s AI health division, explains deep neural networks are additionally used to monitor and predict epidemics.
