Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for several hours when multiple of them entered the country's airspace.

The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations impacting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.

Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.

No fewer than 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
