A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and management of the country's flagship public works projects.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a line built to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” affirmed the national leader.
The official confirmed that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his administration's developmental agenda for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The construction of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its role in national infrastructure. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, defying predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had also fueled significant questions over construction quality.

Demands for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a primary political opposition called for an immediate halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This halt was proposed pending a full technical review. The party stated that the loss of life "requires prompt explanations."
In reply, the president maintained that the train had been operating in total accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and running of these vital projects.
